Ukrainian athletes have secured the milestone 150th medal in the history of the Summer Olympic Games. The “blue and yellow” achieved this mark with a silver medal won by Liudmyla Luzan and Anastasiia Rybachok in the women’s canoe double (500 m) event.
For the first time since independence, Ukrainians took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA. The men’s gymnastics team won its debut medal, a bronze in the team championship, and the next day, Vyacheslav Oliynyk won his historic first gold in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Until Paris 2024, Ukrainians had competed at every Summer Olympics and had consistently won medals of all three types. Atlanta 1996 remains a record for the blue and yellows in terms of gold medals (9), and in 2000 in Sydney, the team repeated the record with a total of 23 medals of all kinds.
At the 2024 Olympics, as of the 14th day of competition, Ukraine has already won three gold medals-the most since London 2012-and 11 medals of all kinds. Luzan and Rybachok in the women’s canoeing final also contributed to another milestone – 40 silver medals for Ukraine at the Summer Olympics.
How many medals have Ukrainians won at the Summer Olympics?
- Atlanta-1996: 9 gold + 2 silver + 12 bronze = 23 medals
- Sydney 2000: 3 + 10 + 10 = 23
- Athens 2004: 8 + 5 + 9 = 22
- Beijing 2008: 7 + 4 + 11 = 22
- London 2012: 5 + 4 + 10 = 19
- Rio 2016: 2 + 5 + 4 = 11
- Tokyo 2020: 1 + 6 + 12
- Paris 2024: 3 + 4 + 4 = 11 (ongoing)
At all eight Olympics in history, Ukrainian athletes have triumphed in two sports: athletics and wrestling. It was the “blue and yellow” athletes who brought the national team the most medals of all kinds – 21 medals (three of them gold), while wrestling athletes won 20.
