The central gastronom on Khreshchatyk in Kyiv did not survive the restoration.

Only the facade remains from the building that once housed the Kane Hotel.

This was reported by the “Heritage” community.

The Kane Hotel building was constructed in 1873–1874 based on a design by Volodymyr Nikolayev and had the status of a national heritage site since 2009. In 2017, a fire broke out on the roof, destroying the floors between levels. The hotel was covered with a banner for further restoration. Later, it was announced that the central gastronom would be turned into a shopping complex.

Activists point out the systematic destruction of historic buildings in Kyiv, which are hidden behind banners. In their view, this indicates a practice of demolishing architectural monuments under the guise of reconstruction.

The public is calling for signatures on a petition demanding the resignation of Marina Solovyova, head of the Department for Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City Administration. According to activists, her actions fail to ensure the proper preservation of the city’s cultural heritage.

Earlier, we reported that Kyiv would strengthen the protection of modernist mosaics and panels from the 1950s to 1980s.
