To remind, on 20 January 1991, a referendum on Crimea’s status took place in Crimea, where the majority voted for renewal of the Crimean autonomy, thus defining status of Crimea as a part of Ukraine. Since then, the Day of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea has been marked on 20 January.

In 2014 Russia invaded Crimea and annexed its territory by a so-called referendum of 16 March that was not recognized neither by Ukraine, nor by the EU and the USA. Now Crimea is considered temporaty occupied territory by Russia.
