UNDP: Annual report “Millennium Development Goals. Ukraine – 2014”

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presents a new report on progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Ukraine. The event will gather representatives from the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine and other interested agencies and think-tanks to discuss the MDGs progress.

The report, titled “MDGs. Ukraine – 2014” was prepared jointly by UNDP, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, and Institute of Demography and Social Studies of MV Ptukha NAS Ukraine. To ensure the objectivity of assessment over one hundred 200 leading experts from various MDG-related fields (leading experts from UN agencies in Ukraine, ministries and state agencies, research institutes, and NGOs) were involved into the process of discussion of MDGs, identification of problems and development of recommendations. The report highlights the implementation of the MDGs’ main targets in Ukraine and is based on a wide range of information, statistics, and analysis.

“Government and experts should take into account international and the UN’s experience in sustainable human development, MDGs and Post 2015 Development Agenda when making decisions on reforms and finding solutions to emerging challenges”, – noted Ella Libanova, Academic and the Director of the Institute.

Additional information: In 2000, the United Nations Millennium Declaration defined a global vision of the development in the form of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with a clear system of targets and indicators and time-frames for achieving them. Reaching the MDGs means real changes in people’s living standards in all countries of the world. The United Nations Secretary-General has issued Annual Reports on the status of the MDGs since 2001, providing a review of development trends in almost all United Nations Member States. In addition, more than 300 national reports have been published in 164 countries. Ukraine joined the United Nations Millennium Declaration and committed to achieve the MDGs by 2015. In 2003 Ukraine became the first post-Soviet country to adapt the MDGs to its national development context. The National Millennium Development Goals are: Goal 1. Reduce Poverty, Goal 2. Ensure Quality Lifelong Education, Goal 3. Promote Gender Equality, Goal 4. Reduce Child Mortality, Goal 5. Improve Maternal Health, Goal 6. Reduce and Slow Down the Spread of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis and Initiate a Trend to Decrease their Scales, Goal 7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability.
