The United States is considering the transfer of Patriot air defense system missiles to Ukraine, which Kyiv needs to defend against enemy missile attacks.
This was stated by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“They (Patriot missiles – ed.) are necessary for their defense. I don’t want to see children being killed. They (Patriots – ed.) are incredibly effective. You know, we shot down 14 out of 14 targets. That’s pretty incredible if you think about it,” the U.S. President noted.
Trump also emphasized that the missiles are needed by Ukraine because the country has suffered greatly from Russian attacks.
When asked whether the United States plans to transfer these missiles to Ukraine, he said he would consider it.
“We can look into it (the transfer of missiles – ed.),” Trump added.
What is know about Trump – Zelenskyy call
It’s worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on July 4, 2025.
According to Zelenskyy, he and Trump agreed on strengthening the protection of Ukrainian airspace from Russian attacks. The Ukrainian head of state also said that they agreed on a corresponding meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian teams.
This conversation took place amid a pause in U.S. arms deliveries to Ukraine, particularly Patriot missile systems.
Previously, U.S. outlet Axios reported, citing unnamed sources, that the call lasted about 40 minutes, and that Trump told Zelenskyy he would check which U.S. weapons, if any, intended for Ukraine had been delayed.
Reuters confirms that during the July 4 call between Trump and Zelensky, Trump “did not rule out” sending Patriot missiles and said Ukraine would need them for defense.
Trump described the Patriots as “pretty amazing,” highlighted their perfect intercept record (e.g., 14 of 14 targets), and said, “They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard”.
The White House earlier paused shipments – including Patriot missiles – due to low U.S. stockpiles.
It is also known that Germany is in talks with the U.S. to fill the Patriot gap by buying systems and sending them to Ukraine.
While the U.S. has not committed yet, Trump has expressed willingness to reconsider and potentially deliver Patriot missiles, emphasizing Ukraine’s pressing defensive needs. With allied momentum—especially from Germany—conditions are increasingly favorable for resuming Patriot support.
