Nuclear weapons in Belarus: EU promises more sanctions

The eleventh package of sanctions against Russia may contain more measures aimed at Belarus.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, commenting on the allegations of nuclear weapons in Belarus, said that Minsk would face additional sanctions if it makes such a decision. 

Morawiecki noted that he is in daily talks with other European Union leaders about the eleventh package of sanctions against Russia, which will include more measures aimed at Belarus.

“This step taken by Russia, the announcement of the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, will certainly lead to the announcement of additional sanctions, the level of sanctions will be much more severe for the Lukashenko regime,” he said.

The prime minister added that Warsaw is considering further restrictions on traffic on the Belarusian border.

“We share a border with Belarus and within the framework of our bilateral relations, we are considering the possibility of tightening restrictions on passenger and freight traffic,” he concluded.

At the same time, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, welcomed the proposal of Poland and the Baltic states to include restrictions on the Russian nuclear energy sector in the 11th EU sanctions package. “Sanctions against the Russian nuclear power industry are exactly what we need,” he emphasized.

As a reminder, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus. He emphasized that he was allegedly asked to do so by Alexander Lukashenko.

“Britain’s statement was a pretext for negotiations with Lukashenko, but Minsk has long been asking for Russian tactical nuclear weapons to be deployed there,” Putin said.

He noted that Russia is not transferring tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, but will deploy them and train the military, like the United States does in Europe.

Putin also said that the construction of a nuclear weapons storage facility would allegedly be completed in Belarus on July 1.

According to him, Belarusians have re-equipped their airplanes – 10 types are ready to use tactical weapons.

According to NSDC Secretary Aleksey Danilov, Putin’s statement creates even more conditions for internal destabilization of Belarus.

Ukraine joined the demand to immediately convene an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.

Lithuania will demand new sanctions in response to Russia’s intention to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

Meanwhile, today Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation had a meeting with the President of Belarus Lukashenko.

“We’ve asked russia to protect us as its own state”, – said Lukashenko after the meeting to the journalists.
