Russian rowers will not compete in the junior European Rowing Championships this year, which will be held in the Polish city of Kruszwica.
This was reported by the President of the Russian Rowing Federation, Oleksiy Svirin, in a comment to the Russian propaganda outlet TASS.
According to him, the reason for this is the refusal of Russian athletes to sign a declaration. By signing it, they would have had to confirm that they had not expressed support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, the state policies of Russia and Belarus, and their leaders, and that they do not intend to do so in the future.
Additionally, the Russian rowers were required to confirm that they do not receive state funding from Russia.
“Currently, we will not be able to compete in Kruszwica. The Polish Rowing Association, as the organizer of the competition, set additional conditions, which we cannot accept.
They want all our athletes who planned to participate in the European Championship to sign declarations stating that they do not receive Russian state funding, as well as sponsorship funds from companies or individuals connected to Russia,” said Svirin.
The European Rowing Championship for athletes under the age of 19 will take place on May 24-25 in Kruszwica, Poland.
Earlier, the Russian Canoe Slalom Federation announced that its athletes were allowed to participate in the World Championship and European Championship for the first time since 2022.
