G20 meeting: consensus on the war against Ukraine was not reached

The final document of the G20 meeting of the Ministers of finance pointed out the parties’ disagreements on the issue of Russia’s war against Ukraine – it was condemned by all parties except China and the russian Federation.

Following a two-day meeting in India, the G20 finance ministers could not reach consensus on a joint statement on the issue of Russia’s war against Ukraine, dw reports. China and the Russian Federation refused to condemn it.

India, which holds the current G20 presidency, has been forced to release a summary of the meeting on its own behalf, noting the parties’ disagreements on the issue of Russia’s war against Ukraine. “Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed that it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy. There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions,” the Reuters agency quotes the chairman’s summary.

This is not the first time that differences of opinion among the G20 countries have been recorded. At the G20 leaders’ meeting in Indonesia last November, they also pointed to “different views and assessments of the situation and sanctions.”

Prime Minister of India: Ready to contribute to any peaceful efforts

During the meeting of the G20 finance ministers, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Scholz called on India to give a clear definition of Russia’s war against ukraine, and to point out the inadmissibility of changing the borders through the use of force.

In turn, Modi said that he wants to help with peace efforts regarding the war in Ukraine. “India is ready to make its contribution to any peace initiative,” he said. At the same time, the Prime Minister emphasizes that Іndia has been calling for the settlement of the military conflict through dialogue and diplomacy since the beginning of the war.

It should be reminded that on February 23, on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, India abstained from voting on “the peace resolution” at the United Nations General Assembly, which demands that Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”
