Ukraine evacuates more that 17 000 people from the flooded areas after Kakhovka dam destruction

The Ukrainian authorities are evacuating more than 17 000 people from flooded areas after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam of Kakhovskaya HPP by Russian forces.

“Over 40,000 people are in danger of being flooded as a result of blowing up the Kakhovka HPP by Russians on the night of June 6. The Ukrainian authorities are evacuating over 17,000 people,” Andriy Kostin, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, said during a conversation with European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

“Unfortunately, more than 25,000 civilians are still in the temporarily occupied territory. The occupying authorities are not carrying out evacuation. This is yet another blatant disregard for human life and international law,” the Prosecutor General stressed.

Floodwaters from the Kakhovka Reservoir are expected to peak on Wednesday morning – “Ukrhydroenergo”.

“In 3-4 days, the floodwaters will begin to subside and will flow into the Black Sea within 10 days,” said the general director of Ukrhydroenergo.

Yesterday, evacuation from Kherson was temporary stopped because of endless massive russian artillery shelling over the city.

There are dead and injured among military and civilians.

Today, it becomes known that the level of water decreased on 20 cm.
