Attack on Kyiv by Russia: Renowned neurobiologist Ihor Zyma and his wife, scientist Olesia Sokur, killed

As a result of the morning “Shahed” attack on Kyiv, Doctor of Biological Sciences at the UNC “Institute of Biology and Medicine,” Ihor Zyma, and his wife lost their lives.

This was reported on Facebook by a family friend, Daria Dushechkina, according to Censor.NET.

“On 01/01/25, during the first drone attack on Kyiv in 2025, our friend, an outstanding individual, Doctor of Sciences Ihor Zyma, was killed along with his entire family – his wife and their cat. Right in their home. In bed,” she noted.

Later, the Minister of Education, Oksen Lisovyi, stated that the scientist couple was killed by Russia during the morning attack on Kyiv.

“Sadly, as a result of the enemy UAV attack, renowned neurobiologist Ihor Zyma and his wife, scientist and Doctor of Biological Sciences Olesia Sokur, were killed.

The family dedicated almost their entire lives to science, working for many years at the ‘Institute of Biology and Medicine’ of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv,” he said.

Earlier, Censor.NET reported that debris from the “Shahed” attack on Kyiv fell in two districts. Two fatalities were confirmed, and the number of injured rose to seven. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the rescue operation at the impact site is complicated by the collapse of stairwells.
