Ukraine war updates: daily briefings as of May 23, 2016

Ukraine war updates and recent info on fighting in southeast Ukraine as of May 23, 2016 by ATO HQ operational data and Presidential Administration spokesman on ATO issues briefing: EMPR highlights.

(1) Donbass war summary as of May 22, 2016 highlights critical intensification of Russian fighting in eastern Ukraine all across the frontline: Russian forces opened fire 31 times upon Ukrainian troops positions over the last 24 hours, including 4 times on Luhansk direction, 10 tines on Donetsk direction and 17 times on Mariupol direction;

(2) Luhansk direction: Russian militants fired in Zhovte and Sokilnyky as well as Russian sniper fire took place in Novozvanivka;

(3) Donetsk direction: the hottest place remains in Avdiivka, right afer the midnight, Russian artillery opened fire from the village of Spartak upon Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka and released about 240 shells during 1 hour; later on, the enemy released 30 mines from the forbidden 82-mm mortars; in addition, Russian shelling took place in Zaytseve, Nevelske and Krasnogorivka; to this end, Russian forces opened fire 6 time from heavy arms on this direction over the last day;

(4) Mariupol direction: most tense situation reported from this sector; A series of mortar attacks took place in Krasnogorivka and Shyrokino; Russian and militant forces struck upon Ukrainian positions near Shyrokyno with 152mm artillery shellings, fired antitank missile system near Pavlopil; the enemy also used APCs, anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft guns and snipers’ fire all across the frontline, except the area of Maryinka and Hranitne; to this end, 4 Russian attacks fulfilled with the use of heavy weaponry on this direction;

(5) Accordign to Ukraine State Intelligence Service Department under the Ministry of Defence, 2 Russian UAVs have entered Ukrainian territory by croosing uncontrolled section of state border near the village of Markyne (Novoazov district, Donetsk Oblast, southeast Ukraine) and the village of Ulyanivske (Amvrosiivska district, Donetsk Oblast, east Ukraine);

(6) Russian armed forces losses in fighting in southeast Ukraine over the last day: 3 wounded in Avdiivka industrial area;

(7) 1 Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action and 3 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the war zone in eastern Ukraine over the last 24 hours.
