Russia – Ukraine war updates: daily briefings as of August 24, 2016

Russia – Ukraine war updates from the war zone in southeast Ukraine as of August 24, 2016 by ATO HQ operational data and Presidential Administration spokesman on ATO issues briefing: EMPR highlights.


(1) The situation in the war zone in eastern Ukraine remains tense. Russia’s hybrid forces opened fire 48 times upon Ukrainian troop positions over the last day, in particular: 7 times on Luhansk direction, 19 times on Donetsk direction and 22 times on Mariupol direction;
(2) Luhansk direction: Russian forces opened fire in Lopaskine, Krymske, Zolote and Popasna; in particular, powerful Russian mortar shelling reported near Krymske;
(3) Donetsk direction: Russia armed forces and its proxies actively used cannons and mortars of various forbidden calibers (from 82-mm to 152-mm) on Svitlodarska line, in the area of Zaytseve and its suburbs, Avdiivka and Nevelske – Krasnogorivka front line; the central area of Avdiivka came under massive Russian mortar fire, railway infrastructure (power substation, tracks, contact network, dispatching operation control building) was damaged;
(4) Mariupol direction:Russian high caliber artillery hit the village of Sionitne, which is located 20 km far from the front; Russian occupiers released 45 rounds there from 152-mm artillery cannons during up to 3 hours; another massive Russian artillery shelling took place in Talakivka, where the enemy released 50 rounds of heavy artillery; dense Russian mortar shelling reported also in Maryinka, where Russian occupiers released 100 rounds during 1 hour (!);
(5) 1 Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action and 1 serviceman was wounded in action in the war zone in southeast Ukraine over the last 24 hours.
