Exhibition on Mariupol’s defence re-opens in Kyiv

Event Details:

  • Date: 2-12 July 2015
  • Venue:

Adress: Arts and Media Lounge of Ukraine Crisis Media Center (2 Khreschatyk str., Ukrainian House)

On 2 July exhibition “Mariupol: the City That Is Defending Itself” re-opens in Kyiv in the new space after being on display in the Kyiv Fortress Museum over this past spring. The exhibition’s first artifacts were brought in by the military, however it grew into a full-fledged visual and conceptual project due to volunteers who managed to collect the items that narrate Mariupol’s life in the face of Russian aggression since spring 2014. Photos and paintings, pieces of munitions and broken windows, militant flags and enemy’s maps show key periods of city’s life: occupation by militants and its liberation by Ukrainian forces in spring 2014, militant shelling of Mariupol’s Skhidny district that took away lives of 30 civilians in January 2015. One of exhibition’s key motives is Mariupol in yellow and blue – the city seen by its residents as integral part of united Ukraine.

For more details check our earlier interview with the exhibition’s ideator Valentyna Okhlopkova.
