Shooter Serhii Kulish wins silver in rifle shooting at the 2024 Olympics

Second Medal for Ukraine at the Paris Games won shooter Serhii Kulish. He got silver medal in rifle shooting at the 2024 Olympics.

Ukrainian shooter Serhii Kulish is the silver medalist at the 2024 Olympic Games. He earned this award in the final of the 50-meter rifle three positions event.

Kulish became the first Ukrainian shooter to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in shooting. In the qualification round, he achieved the third-best result, scoring 199 out of 200 points in both the kneeling and standing positions.

In the 50-meter rifle three positions final at the Olympics, Kulish competed for the second time. At the previous Games in Tokyo, he fought for a medal for a long time but accidentally shot at the wrong target in the decisive moment and finished eighth.

How did Kulish perform in the rifle three positions shooting?

  • The competition format required athletes to complete three series of five shots in two positions, kneeling and prone, and two more series in the standing position, followed by elimination series.
  • In the kneeling position, Kulish had two shots out of 15 that were not in the “ten” – the 9th and 11th shots.
  • However, in the prone position, Kulish made up for it, scoring no less than 10.3 points. With his last shot, he scored 10.8 points, moving up to third place.
  • After the first series of shots in the standing position, Kulish held third place but was only 0.1 points ahead of India’s Swapnil Kusale.
  • After the second series of shots, Kulish even took the lead, scoring 10.9 points with his fourth shot. His lead over the fourth place was 2.1 points, but he was only 0.1 points behind second place.
  • In the end, Kulish became the Olympic vice-champion, losing only to China’s Liu Yukun but securing the second medal for Ukraine at the 2024 Games.

What does Serhii Kulish’s silver medal mean?

  • Second Olympic medal in Kulish’s career. He became the vice-champion in the 10m air rifle shooting at the Rio 2016 Games.
  • Second medal in Ukraine’s history at the Olympics in the 50m rifle three positions shooting. The first was won by Yuriy Sukhorukov at the Beijing Games in 2008.
  • Second medal for Ukraine at the 2024 Olympic Games. The first was won by Olga Kharlan – bronze in the individual sabre fencing event.
