“Under Confinement” installation opened in an underground crossing that connects the Ukrainian House with the National Philharmonic in Kyiv.

The opening took place on the day before the 30th anniversary of Chornobyl disaster that is marked on 26 April. The exhibition is co-organized by the Institute of National Memory, Archive department of Ukraine’s Security Service and by the Research Center of Liberation Movement.

The installation presents disaster-related facts some of which are known and some are revealed for the first time. Audio of talks between the Chornobyl power plant dispatchers is played. Head of the Institute of National Memory, historian VolodymyrVyatrovychsays he has already worked with secret KGB documents before and came to the conclusion that the catastrophe was inevitable. “Before 26 April 1986 there were five cases of failure, 29 emergency stops and 63 cases of equipment failure,” historian says. “It was the failure of the entire totalitarian system,” he adds.

VolodymyrVyatrovych will hold a lecture “Catastrophe named after Lenin. Chornobyl in KGB documents” on 28 April at 18.30.
