America’s abandonment of commitments

The State Department and the White House have erased traces of the security guarantees agreements between Ukraine and the United States from their websites. The only working official link I found led to the U.S. Embassy’s website in Italy, but I think it will be removed soon as well.

Now America can sign any agreements, make any promises, guarantees, and support — and then simply remove it from the website and say: “There was no such agreement. Fake news!!!”

In international relations, there is the principle of good faith fulfillment of international legal obligations (pacta sunt servanda), which obliges states to honestly and fully fulfill their commitments, including those arising from public statements. This principle is recognized as one of the cornerstones of international law. Now it is dead.

If the U.S. so easily renounces its word, it means that no one can be sure of their commitments anymore. Any promise they make is now worth exactly as long as they keep the information about it on the State Department’s website.

Even Russia, which invaded Ukraine, didn’t remove the treaty on friendship and cooperation from its archives. They violated it — yes, but they didn’t try to erase the very fact of its existence.

But the U.S. can now simply delete any signature from a treaty and pretend it was never there. They haven’t just abandoned their commitments to Ukraine — they are putting on a show of righteous indignation and pressuring us to comply with Moscow’s demands. This is exactly what Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated.

Maybe Trump is laying the groundwork for signing new agreements — but this time with Putin?

Those who still believe in Trump’s “great deal” are fools. He doesn’t make deals, he just cancels already undertaken commitments to sell his betrayal to the Americans as a strategy.
