Trump strikes at Ukrainian refugees
U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze international aid programs under the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department has left Mapuj Pomoc, the largest aid hub for Ukrainian refugees in Poland, without funding.
However, this decision has not only affected organizations helping refugees. Educational institutions are also at risk. Antonina Mikhalovska, deputy director of the Warsaw-based Ukrainian school SzkoUA, said that throughout the academic year, funding for projects dedicated to Ukrainian refugees in Poland has been significantly reduced.
“We are in a rather difficult situation and will have to decide on our existence in the coming months. Unfortunately, we lack the funds to continue operating,” Mikhalovska noted.
Trump’s decision has caused a wave of concern among Polish civil society organizations. Many are now struggling to find new sources of support to continue their work under difficult conditions, leaving the impact of this decision on the lives of thousands who relied on these initiatives an open question.
