AEA funded Russian nuclear research in occupied Crimea, Radio Free Europe says
After the annexation of Crimea and the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the IAEA funded research by Russian scientists in Crimea, despite officially recognizing the peninsula as Ukrainian. In response to a request from Radio Free Europe, the IAEA stated that the agency continues to consider Crimea as part of Ukraine. The scientific projects supported by the IAEA were said to have an “exclusively technical nature.”
Additionally, as Radio Free Europe discovered, a training organized with IAEA funds is set to begin in Moscow this week, with several participants arriving from temporarily occupied Donetsk after their nominations were approved by the agency’s secretariat. In IAEA internal documents, their country of residence is listed as Russia, a fact that the IAEA did not comment on.
