U.S. provides the Expeditionary Medical Support System (EMEDS) to Ukraine

The Expeditionary Medical Support System (EMEDS) is a light, lean, forward resuscitative care facility designed to provide rapidly deployable, tailored medical support for the full range of military operations, the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine reports.

Today the United States officially transferred to the Government of Ukraine a $7.6 million dollar expeditionary military field hospital to defend Ukraine’s sovereign territory against aggression by Russian armed forces and proxies in eastern Ukraine.

The Mobile Field Hospital (MFH) owned by the State of California is a very robust asset capable of providing tremendous support following a large scale emergency. However, transporting, setting up, staffing, and coordinating the needed wrap around services is a tremendous undertaking.

EMEDS in the war zone in eastern Ukraine can be used to provide forward stabilization, primary care, dental services, and force health protection, as well as to prepare casualties for evacuation to the next level of care.

The facility is designed to be manned by 30 medical/medical support personnel. It can provide forward resuscitative care for a force population of up to 3,000 people. It consists of 4 tents, takes about 24 hours to erect, and can operate in an austere environment for up to 10 days until resupply.
