Russia controls four settlements in the Sumy region – Regional Military Administration

The Russian invaders continue their attempts to advance in order to create a so-called “buffer zone.”

Four settlements in the Sumy region are currently under Russian control: Novenke, Basivka, Veselivka, and Zhuravka. The enemy is advancing in an effort to create a so-called “buffer zone.”

This was reported by the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov, who shared an update on the situation along the border.

“As of today, the settlements of Novenke and Basivka in the Yunakivka community, as well as Veselivka and Zhuravka in the Khotin community, are under enemy control. The residents of these villages were evacuated long ago, and there is no threat to the civilian population,” Hryhorov stated.

He added that Russian invaders continue their attempts to advance in order to establish the so-called “buffer zone.” Fighting is ongoing on the outskirts of the village of Vodolaha, and near Volodymyrivka, Bilovody, Kostiantynivka, and Kindrativka in the Khotin community, as well as on the outskirts of Loknia in the Yunakivka community.

“The Defense Forces of Ukraine and all components of our defense are keeping the situation under control, delivering precise fire strikes on the enemy. Our defenders are decisively repelling enemy attacks and preventing them from advancing deeper into the Sumy region,” stated the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

As a reminder, analysts from DeepState also recently reported that at least 62.6 square kilometers of border territory in Sumy region are currently under Russian control. The most difficult situation is around the settlements of Veselivka, Zhuravka, Novenke, and Basivka. Offensive actions have also been reported in the direction of the village of Bilovody, which has now become part of the so-called “gray zone.”

What’s happening in Sumy region

According to the British BBC service, citing its own sources, Russia’s goal is to create a buffer zone in Sumy region and partially encircle the city of Sumy. This information is also being confirmed by Russian media, which report plans to seize a 15–20 km wide strip of land in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions — allegedly for the “security” of Russia’s Kursk region following the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces.

On May 26, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, Andriy Demchenko, reported that Russian forces had intensified combat operations in areas adjacent to the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
