On Saturday, May 17, a farewell ceremony was held in Kyiv for Chris Garrett — a British volunteer and veteran. The 40-year-old demining expert was killed near the city of Izium in the Kharkiv region.
This was reported by Channel 24, citing Radio Liberty. The ceremony took place on Independence Square.
Kyiv bids farewell to the volunteer
Chris Garrett had been helping Ukraine since 2014 — he worked in demining, trained soldiers, and took part in combat operations. After 2022, he operated in the de-occupied territories, including Bucha and Irpin.
The volunteer was killed in an explosion while surveying a Russian minefield in the Kharkiv region. He is survived by his wife and young daughter.

Notably, the British volunteer was a co-founder of the humanitarian organization Prevail Together, where Australian Nick Parsons — another foreign national killed near Izium — also worked.
According to preliminary reports, both volunteers were attempting to neutralize an advanced explosive device inside a building.
As a reminder, a third Latvian volunteer has also been killed in the fighting in Ukraine — Mykyta Tarenov, known by the call sign “Latvian.”
