Famous Odessa Potemkin Steps become Treasure of European Film Culture

11 July, in the framework of the 6th Odessa International Film Festival a special Treasure of European Film Culture emblem was inaugurated next to the Potemkin Steps awarded by the European Film Academy.

The ceremony was held by the secretary of the Odessa City Council Oleg Bryndak, OIFF president Victoria Tigipko and the representative of the European Film Academy Marek Rosenbaum.

The Potemkin Steps have become a part of the world cinematography thanks to Sergei Eisenstein’s masterpiece Battleship Potemkin shot 90 years ago.

‘We should open this place and show to everybody that this is the place of European cinema, the place that everybody should visit and should keep as it is forever just to remember what important thing happened here’, Marek Rosenbaum said at the opening ceremony.

Victoria Tigipko noted that open-air screening on the Potemkin Steps gathers more than 15,000 people each year, and this is a link between past and present, attracting more and more visitors to Odessa.

The Potemkin Steps are the fifth location to be awarded by the European Film Academy. Treasures of European Film Culture include: the Eisenstein Memorial Centre in Moscow, the House of the brothers Lumière in Lyon, the Bergman Center in Faro and the World of Tonino Guerra in Pennabilli.
